What is a VPN?
A VPN (or Virtual Private Network) can offer 2 types of protection. One is from the ISP (or Internet Service Provider), the VPN creates an encrypted tunnel connecting your device with the broader internet. This way the ISP cannot see your traffic. It can be very useful on less secure, public networks like hotels.
The other protection is from the sites you visit. Without a VPN tunnel, the sites you visit can see your IP address (which is tied to a physical location).
Keep in mind that by using a VPN, you are shifting trust from the ISP to the VPN provider. Make sure this is something you are comfortable with and use a reputable VPN provider.
What does a VPN NOT do?
A VPN will not make you anonymous on the internet. It also cannot guarantee protection from big tech companies. Stay clear of providers that make grand claims like this.
